Each year, hundreds of thousands of scholarly manuscripts travel the "publishing supply chain" from author creation to publication in branded scholarly journals, representing a multibillion-dollar industry. Throughout this workflow, numerous participants contribute to the improvements in manuscript quality, such as peer reviewers, subject editors, copy editors, print vendors, and publishers. As recent as ten years ago, this process was fragmented, paper based, and highly inefficient, but the advent of the Internet has created the potential for transformation of the publishing supply chain—a process that is still under way.
Software from Aries Systems Corporation has emerged as a central link in the supply chain re-engineering taking place in publishing today. It therefore represents an ideal platform for integration with Allen Press content management and content delivery solutions, including composition, online publishing, and printing. Gerald Lillian, CEO of Allen Press, said, "Partnering with Aries Systems allows us to offer the full spectrum of content management services. Our customers now have their choice of two of the most robust manuscript submission and peer review products on the market and the added ability to track the production process and ultimately reduce time to publish—something we continually strive to accomplish for our society partners."
In addition to Preprint Manager and Editorial Manager, Allen Press will continue to support its existing manuscript submission and peer review products, AllenTrack™ and AllenTrack Essentials™. Currently hosting more than 135 submission and peer review sites, Allen Press provides training, support, and configuration assistance to more than 100 societies. Peer review continues to be an integral part of Allen Press’ content management offering.
"The scholarly publishing industry is changing very fast and faces both threats and opportunities. The combination of services from Aries Systems and Allen Press offers a very attractive package for journals and scholarly societies and allows them to take full advantage of new dynamics of publishing," said Lyndon Holmes, President of Aries Systems Corporation.

December 9, 2007 - The Taylor & Francis Group Ltd., of Oxford, UK, named Odyssey Press as the North American print partner in an announcement to launch their global pilot initiative to distribute and print (D&P) their scholarly journals. The journals will be published and distributed simultaneously on three continents, Europe, North America and Asia for this pilot program. "The goal of this program is to deliver the journals to the subscribers faster, and in better condition while, minimizing our client’s carbon footprint", said Tad Parker, President of Odyssey Press. He continued, "in the past all the journals were printed in one location and flown all over the world to the subscribers. This new publishing model prints and distributes the journal locally, there by, eliminating the need for air transport."
Upon successful completion of the pilot program, this distribute-and-print system will be expanded up to accommodate many more of the Taylor and Francis journal titles. The D&P network can also be scaled up to include more print locations around the globe. The three printers involved in this pilot program are members of the International Printers Network (IPN). The IPN is comprised of 50 member companies with over 150 locations, that stand ready to create a larger network for Taylor & Francis that has greater global coverage and granularity. Matthew Howells, the Director of Global Production and Distribution for Taylor & Francis stated, "This could be the beginning of a global print on demand network that will revolutionise the publishing and distribution models of scholarly journals."

OECD is embarking on a program of rolling releases that will see three new dissemination services with a multitude of new features. OECD.Stat is the first and will be launched as a beta version as part of SourceOECD, at Online Information in London on the 4th December 2007 - please see www.sourceoecd.org/database/oecdstat for details.
OECD.Stat offers three key features:
Enrico Giovannini, OECD's Chief Statistician, said: "The gathering of reliable and intelligent information is at the core of good politics, and societies are changing quickly, so statistics must continuously evolve to reflect the world in which we live. The challenge for the statistical tools that we are delivering today, and will deliver tomorrow, is not only to make statistics easier to find and understand, but also to enable us to build a foundation to present information that is yet to come."
"The launch of OECD.Stat in SourceOECD, OECD's iLibrary, is the first step in an extensive project to enhance OECD's publishing services for users," said Toby Green, Head of OECD Publishing. "Over the coming twelve months we'll be launching a number of major improvements to our online services covering both our statistical and analytical publications, OECD.Stat is just the start."

October 5, 2007 - VISTA, market leader in applications to support the publishing supply chain, recently announced that Sdu Publishers, the leading Dutch publisher of legal and professional journals and books, has selected VISTA’s information commerce software to pilot real-time customer profile management in support of online access to Sdu Publishers' NBDOnline website. Ongoing developments will investigate the benefits of integrating this new software with existing technologies, supplied to Sdu Publishers by both VISTA and other providers, to create a comprehensive management system for online and offline publishing activities.
"We have worked with VISTA for many years, and are delighted that their new online capabilities give us the option to deliver a stronger service to our clients without seeking an alternative partner," says Marcel Verhaar, System Owner at Sdu Publishers. "We are impressed by the speed with which they have completed the developments thus far, and we are now studying the feasibility of rolling out this new functionality to support more of our websites in the near future."
VISTA's Professional Services Director Jason Bennett adds, "One of the core differentiators of our information commerce software is its ability to consolidate administration of multiple web interfaces. Having implemented Sdu Publishers’ pilot Information Commerce System, we are already working on the developments which will extend its online functionality ready for launch across their entire web presence. Ultimately, our proven software is making it cheaper and faster for them to develop the new websites and digital commerce models which will drive their revenues ongoing."
VISTA added information commerce middleware to its extensive suite of publishing software following its February 2007 merger with Ingenta to form Publishing Technology plc. Rapid implementation of the new system for Sdu Publishers has been facilitated by the software's modular architecture, which fragments the sophisticated functionality into individual component capabilities that can be readily repurposed and combined to meet specific publisher needs. The software gives publishers the agility to capitalise on market trends by providing tools which can quickly and easily create or modify licensing models. It is already proving successful for launch customer Institute of Physics Publishing, which recently transferred all subscription, access and profile administration for its IOP journals, Physics World Archive and IOPscience websites to VISTA's information commerce software.
Please visit the VISTA stand (Hall 4.2, D416) at the Frankfurt Book Fair for further information.
