How Canadian researchers are reacting to the changing publishing environment.

March 27, 2014A Canadian-centric look at attitudes and behaviours in scholarly science and technology publishing 2014 – report now available.

“Canadian researchers agree with principle, not cost, of open access” — just one key finding in a newly released report on Canadian science researchers’ publishing attitudes and behaviours. In February, Canadian Science Publishing — publisher of the NRC Research Press journals — commissioned Phase 5, an independent research agency, to conduct this objective survey of Canadian researchers. This is the first investigation that specifically addresses the Canadian perspective; the report summarizing the findings is now available.

This survey was designed to examine Canadian scientific researchers’ attitudes and behaviours as both consumers and authors of research.  As consumers, researchers were asked about their process for literature searches and how they assess the quality of articles they read.  As authors, researchers were asked about the decisions they make when publishing their work.

The results, based on responses from 540 participants representing scientific and technical fields, present an objective snapshot of how researchers are reacting to changes in the scholarly publishing environment, and highlight some opportunities to better address their needs going forward.

“Our aim was to give Canadian researchers the opportunity to express their views on the emergence of open access and the ways it has changed their decisions on where and how to publish their work,” says Cameron Macdonald, Executive Director of Canadian Science Publishing. “We also wanted to collect and share this information with our publishing peers and stakeholders who operate within the Canadian publishing landscape to help support and implement solutions that better serve the needs of researchers.”

The survey questions were delivered in both English and French. The full report is available HERE in English and the key findings have been translated to French and can be read HERE.
