The July issue of Learned Publishing is now available

July 9, 2015 – The July issue of Learned Publishing is now out. There are three substantial articles asking how well we know ourselves, our end users, and the academics with whom we work

  • Mark Carden looks at career paths in academic publishing – a tricky area where there are endless permutations of job titles and roles and unclear pathways for individuals to navigate. The article also considers when and why people move from academia to publishing – is it the lure of publishing or dissatisfaction with the research environment?
  • Scholarly Reputation – This article from Ciber considers how academics in Europe use social media to promote themselves and build reputations. We assume they are becoming more socially active and add various tools onto our websites, but do authors make good use of the social media tools available, and how aware and useful do they find them when it comes to building their reputations?
  • Back to publishers, another article looks at end users in book publishing and how well we understand them, along with a useful case study from Woodhead Publishing.

From the international perspective.

We also have two short pieces looking at fair use/dealing – in the US and the UK, and how different philosophies and laws guide our use of content.

  • To start the issue – my editorial (with a deliberately provocative title) asks how well we deal with grey literature – what do you think?

And finally I would like to welcome a new editorial board to the journal – you will find short bios about the new Associate Editors and I look forward to working with them to develop the journal in the next few years.
