New Journal JAMA Oncology to Debut in 2015; Disis Named as Editor-in-Chief

October 7, 2014Chicago – The JAMA Network will launch a new journal, JAMA Oncology (http://oncology.jamanetwork.com), to publish important cancer-related research and named Mary L. (Nora) Disis, M.D., a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle, as editor-in-chief.

JAMA Oncology presents an important new initiative for The JAMA Network – our first new journal in many years. The worldwide research effort in oncology is substantial, including lab, translational, clinical, and health services research, and there are many important evolving clinical and policy issues. JAMA Oncology will include original investigation, opinion (viewpoints, editorials, and invited commentaries), and clinical reviews. And we could not be more fortunate than to have Nora Disis as our inaugural editor-in-chief. She is an internationally renowned investigator and a superb clinician,” said Howard Bauchner, M.D., editor-in-chief of JAMA and the JAMA Network.

When JAMA Oncology premieres in early 2015, it will be the 11th journal in the JAMA Network, which includes JAMA and nine other specialty journals. All of the JAMA Oncology content – research, reviews and opinions – will be published online each week on Thursday and then printed in a monthly paper issue. JAMA Oncology will be the first new journal to be launched by the JAMA Network since 1999.

JAMA Oncology will address all aspects of medical, radiation and surgical oncology and its subspecialties. The journal will be a leader in the high-impact field of cancer research, where the volume of work and innovative discoveries have accelerated at a remarkable pace in an effort to keep up with the expected increase in patients diagnosed with cancer.

“Extending the JAMA Network editorial franchise to serve the worldwide oncology community is an opportunity for us to serve physicians engaged in both advancing the science and practice of oncology at a critical time for the field. Backed by the strength of the JAMA Network and such forward-thinking editorial leadership, JAMA Oncology will be a leader in the field beginning in 2015,” said Thomas J. Easley, publisher of JAMA and the JAMA Network.

As the journal’s founding editor, Dr. Disis brings extensive experience to her new role. In addition to serving as a professor of medicine, Disis is director of the Center for Translational Medicine in Women’s Health and director of the Institute of Translational Health Sciences at the University of Washington. Disis, who specializes in breast and ovarian cancer and immunotherapy, has been deputy editor, translational oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology and on the advisory board for Science Translational Medicine. She graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School and completed an internal medicine residency and chief residency at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She trained in oncology at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to launch an oncology journal under the JAMA banner and with the tools that the JAMA Network brings to communicating breakthrough discoveries. JAMA Oncology will be an impactful journal that both scientists and clinicians can access for state of the art research along with commentaries and viewpoints that elucidate key findings. JAMA Oncology will position itself to be the voice of the oncology community across the nation and worldwide via our timely opinion pieces. Our clinical education content will keep practitioners current and set a strong foundation for trainees to begin the practice of oncology,” said Dr. Disis.

Existing customers will have free access to JAMA Oncology in 2015. Individual physicians and other health care professionals also will be eligible to access content for free on The JAMA Network Reader.
