Upcoming Event in Durham, NC: A Q&A with University Leaders on the Future of Scholarly Publishing

The enthusiastic reception of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP)’s first regional event, a sold-out spring lecture at the American Meteorological Society in Boston, has led to two more regional events this fall–a speed-networking night in Boston on October 20, and a panel discussion in Durham, NC, on October 8. The Durham event will feature three leaders from the scholarly communications community and will explore how publishers and universities can work together to support academic research. Speakers include Sarah Michalak, Associate Provost and University Librarian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Greg Raschke, Associate Director for Collections and Scholarly Communication at North Carolina State University; and Kevin Smith, Director of Copyright and Scholarly Communication at Duke University.

The panel will take place at Research Square’s modern office space in downtown Durham, and the event will kick off with a half hour of networking over wine and appetizers from local restaurant Parker & Otis. Co-organizer Ben Mudrak is looking forward to a lively discussion:

“The idea for a Q&A was inspired by a well received panel at the SSP annual meeting featuring university provosts,” said Mudrak. “So much of our work in scholarly communications is influenced by university decision-makers, and it is important to hear how they see the publishing field evolving.”

The SSP Regional Programming Task Force sees this event as an opportunity to bring together local publishers, librarians, vendors, freelancers, and any other individuals who work in scholarly communications.

“We hope that the panel discussion will lay the groundwork for ongoing Triangle-based events focused on scholarly publishing,” says co-organizer Jocelyn Dawson. “We have a strong scholarly publishing community in our area and can only benefit from closer collaboration.”
