Webinar Preview—“A Bucket List of Skills: How to Make Publishing Your Career”

February 11, 2016 – The first of the 2016 Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Webinar Series—“A Bucket List of Skills: How to Make Publishing Your Career” will be held on Tuesday, March 8 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST. Register today if you’re an early career professional interested in identifying the skills that will serve you in your early career, or a manager looking to support the professional development of your young employees.

The webinar will be moderated by Jessica Loayza, Web Publications Coordinator for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. She will be speaking to panelists Angus Phillips, Head of the School of Arts and Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University, Alice Meadows, Director of Community Engagement & Support at ORCID, and Patty Baskin, Executive Editor of the Neurology Journals.

Looking back on their beginnings in Scholarly Publishing, our three speakers will discuss the toolsets and skills they required—whether that be proficiencies previously refined, learned on the job, or sought out in additional trainings—to be successful in their initial positions. They will also discuss what key skills stand out to them as imperative and progressively more useful and necessary to develop further in future roles in order to create and build upon a long and rewarding career in publishing.

We asked Loayza to expand on what else we can learn from the webinar.

What can attendees expect from this webinar?
They can expect to hear from a group of panelists who have a variety of experience in the publishing industry and how they got started. They will go over individual skills they felt like were essential to their career path, including skills that are essential upon entering the publishing workforce, what skills they learned once they got there, and what skills they sought after having been in the industry for some time.

How was this group of panelists selected?
Each panelist was selected by early career professionals themselves from the Early Career Task Force. These early career professionals felt that these speakers could provide great insight into starting and maintaining a successful career in publishing.

Are there any topics in particular you hope the panelists will address during the webinar?
I am hoping they address skills they feel like will be increasingly important for the future.

What would you like attendees to take away from this webinar?
I hope attendees will come away with confidence in knowing what skills they should focus on to further their publishing career. I hope that the speakers can provide them with great advice and tips so that the early career professionals feel well-equipped in their careers, no matter what path they take within the industry.
