Seminar 6: The Answer is Standards…

Tim Clark, Ph.D. is a bioinformatician and computer scientist, whose focus is to apply biomedical informatics and data science to understanding and curing neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimers Disease. More broadly, his research seeks to improve methods of biomedical knowledge representation, integration and discovery for Open Science. He is appointed at Massachusetts General Hospital as a Computer Scientist and at Harvard Medical School as an Assistant Professor of Neurology. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Manchester. Dr. Clark serves on the Board of Directors of the FORCE11 consortium for research communications and digital scholarship.

Laurie Kaplan, Senior Project Manager at ProQuest, works with the Content teams to improve processes and workflows. Over the last 13 years at ProQuest Laurie has directed the international data team responsible for Ulrichs Periodicals Directory, Ulrichsweb, and the multinational databases in 360 Core, as well as the provider relations team responsible for Summon. Prior to joining ProQuest, Laurie worked in legal directory and legal newspaper publishing. Laurie has been an active participant on two NISO committees PIE-J and PESC. She has also been an active participant on the ICEDIS committee of EDItEUR. Laurie is now on the NASIG Board as a Member-at-Large, a co-chair of the EDItEUR/ICEDIS committee, and the Convenor of ISO-8/TC-46/WG7. This depth of experience positions Laurie as a subject matter expert with previous presentations and related articles on topics ranging from open access, metadata and standards to linked data and serials. Laurie earned a BA from Lafayette College, a JD from St. Johns University School of Law, and an MLIS from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Nettie Lagace is the Associate Director for Programs at NISO, where she is responsible for facilitating the work of NISOs topic committees and development groups for standards and best practices, and working with the community to encourage broad adoption of this consensus work. Prior to joining NISO in 2011, Nettie worked for a library software vendor, where she served for 11 years as project training librarian and product manager. She holds a M.I.L.S. from the University of Michigan.

Bill Kasdorf is VP and Principal Consultant of Apex Content Solutions. Past President of SSP, he is a recipient of SSPs Distinguished Service Award, the IDEAlliance/DEER Luminaire Award, and the BISG Industry Champion Award. Bill serves on the Steering Committee of the W3C Publishing Business Group and the W3Cs EPUB 3 Community Group and Digital Publishing Interest Group; the International Press Telecommunications Council; is Chair of the BISG Content Structure Committee; and is an active member of ABC, the Accessible Books Consortium, the EDUPUB Alliance, the IDEAlliance Tech Council, and the SSP Organizational Collaboration Committee. Bill has spoken at many industry events, such as SSP, STM, AAUP, DBW, OReilly TOC, NISO, BISG, IDPF, IPTC, Seybold Seminars, and the Library of Congress. In his consulting practice, Bill has served publishers such as Pearson, Wolters Kluwer, Kaplan, Sage, Harvard, Toronto, Taylor & Francis, Cambridge, ASME, and IEEE, and organizations such as the World Bank, the British Library, OCLC, and the European Union.

Heather Ruland Staines, Ph.D., is Director of Partnerships at Hypothes.is, a non-profit in the annotation and collaboration space. She recently served as a Director for the ProQuest Global Content Alliance team where she managed content licensing for Discovery (Summon and Primo) and Course Materials (SIPX and Leganto) initiatives. Her previous roles include Global eProduct Manager and Senior Manager eOperations at Springer SBM (now Springer Nature). She began her career as an acquisitions editor for Praeger Publishers, where she was eventually Editorial Director for Praeger Security International, a multi-format imprint. She is an avid supporter of industry events, recently serving as Co-Chair of the SSPs Education Committee and Chair of the ALA ALCTS CRS Education, Research, and Publications Coordinating Committee. In August 2016, she joined the COUNTER Board of Directors. She is part of NISOs Transfer Standing Committee and the STM Associations Futurelab and Programming Committee. She earned a Ph.D. from Yale University.
