An Engineering Approach to Scholar-Library-Publisher Digital Collaboration

Concurrent 6D: An Engineering Approach to Scholar-Library-Publisher Digital Collaboration

This session will focus on an innovative collaboration between a group of scholars, a university library, and a university press to bring together a body of research around a substantial collection of historical material. The project, the Black Press Born Digital (BPBD), will organize and present the archives of Black newspapers in America and present them with new interpretive research drawn from them. The result will be both an open database for scholars and a linked trove of digital and print monographs related to African-American newspapers. While the most tangible outcomes from theproject will be the series of print and digital monographs along with an interactive database, the reality is that the longer lasting consequences will include an engineering-based approach to collaboration and an ethnographic evaluation of how scholars, publishers, and libraries can collaborate. In a fundamental sense, the project offers us an opportunity to consider intended consequences from a novel collaboration.
