Concurrent 3C: Building and Leveraging Engagement in the Era of the Social Web

The duel forces of economic pressure and technological advances have created an environment in which readers increasingly look outside of the traditional publisher->library-> patron pathway in order to obtain scholarly articles. These circumstances pose both a concern for both publishers and libraries in terms of disintermediation and an opportunity to engage with researchers in new ways.A panel consisting of representatives from diverse stakeholders would explore how publishers, technology, vendors and libraries alike are reaching out to researchers on the their own terms and providing services based around enhancing existing academic workflows in order to not merely reverse the trend of disintermediation but create new business opportunities that capitalize on the social web.
