Science and the Trump Administration: What’s Next?

In his first 4 months in office, President Donald Trump has done little to assuage the fears of the U.S. scientific community that his administration is deeply suspicious of federal support for research and harbors doubts about how science should inform policy. But how realistic are those concerns? Jeff Mervis’s talk will examine Trump’s actions in three important areas of policymaking: The people he has chosen for key staff positions at the various science agencies, his spending requests to Congress for the fiscal years 2017 and 2018, and the actions the White House has taken that directly affect the U.S. scientific community. Jeff will review the status of research issues in the current 115th Congress and the role of key legislators in shaping the nation’s science policy. He will also look at recent events such as the global March for Science. There will be plenty of time for questions, so attendees are encouraged to start thinking about the pressing issues where they’d like to learn more.
