Mobilizing Research into New Formats: Crossing the Boundaries of the PDF

Concurrent 3A: Mobilizing Research into New Formats: Crossing the Boundaries of the PDF

Millions of researchers produce new scholarship of all varieties each year, but PDFs and books remain the primary vehicles for sharing peer-reviewed work. These traditional formats work well for sharing knowledge among colleagues, but their complex language and static nature can prevent them from reaching their entire potential audience. New multimedia formats expand the audience for research through new channels, resulting in more visibility and greater understanding among the public. This panel will focus on knowledge mobilization, the transfer of new information from formal research into active use, and ways that publishers, authors, and institutions can mobilize their work. After an overview of current efforts in knowledge mobilization, case studies of the effectiveness of lay summaries and video summaries will be presented. The panel will also touch on efforts to share scholarship in the humanities in new formats and finish with time for audience discussion.
