Open Access: Its Promises, Challenges, and Future, Part I

Concurrent 2A: Open Access: Its Promises, Challenges, and Future, Part I

The pace of change in scholarly publishing has accelerated over the past year as publishers, authors and funding agencies have proposed or implemented significant new open access (OA) initiatives, some with potentially disruptive consequences.

This session brings together key stakeholders, including publishing representatives, OA advocates, librarians, authors and top UK and US funding agencies to discuss and debate the recent developments and share their views on what the future might hold for scholarly communications.

Speakers will cover critical issues such as the longer-term impact of new UK and US funder mandates, the future of the subscription model, how legacy publishing service providers can play a new role in OA, possible new business models and OA ventures, the effect of academic social networking platforms, and the impact of OA on scholarly societies and libraries.

A two-part session of 2A & 3A; presenters are at both, including panel discussion with audience participation.
