Concurrent 5B: Transformative Publishing Platforms for Digital Scholarship in the Humanities
Scholars in the humanities are increasingly applying digital technologies in their research. Their publishers are increasingly seeing demand for new tools and platforms that can present scholarly outputs in more natively digital ways: How can audio, video, and other rich media components be best integrated with text? Is it possible to represent the complete lifecycle of a book project as well as the book itself? What kinds of additional discovery and exploration can richly tagged XML facilitate? In the last 18 months, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has announced support for a range of platform development projects and this session will report on progress. These platforms have distinctive characteristics but respond to the shared problem of how publishers can sustainably support digital scholarship in the humanities. The presenters will describe the specific problems their work is focused on solving, their progress so far, and what issues remain to be addressed.
