Username Unknown – The Lack of Social Integration in Scholarly Websites

There is a striking gap between theory and practice in the integration of social media and scholarly publishing. Many consumer brands have realized the potential of social media. Publisher content platforms, by contrast, do nothing or simply provide links for sharing, despite the tangible benefits of using social media in terms of usability for end users and increased online traffic. The emergence of ORCID as a mechanism for contributor identity raises the stakes for publishers as it separates the management of individual identity from the publisher platform. This model of federated identity is already prevalent in the consumer world; using Facebook or Twitter as a login mechanism significantly lowers the barriers to usage of personalized websites. In this session we’ll examine the current state of integration in scholarly websites, hear lessons learned, and examine options for deeper integration with social platforms and identity services such as ORCID.
