Concurrent 2C: Watch, Listen, Learn: Publishing Multimedia Materials

Incorporating multimedia into scholarly publications is increasingly common as publishers seek useful, innovative ways to disseminate content. Authors and editors are increasingly comfortable supplying video, audio, and animation; users more readily access multimedia materials; publishers are developing ways to review, process, and integrate multimedia into their offerings in ways that are consistent with quality standards. Speakers will provide an overview and detailed case studies about issues they have faced in publishing multimedia. Representatives from a major surgical journal will relay how they are developing processes to incorporate peer review of multimedia submissions and the technology needed to produce effective materials. A society publisher will present an array of innovative multimedia implementations successful and otherwise. A scholarly publisher will demonstrate that multi-media need not be out of reach for small to medium-sized publishers. Each speaker will address business and technological implications of multimedia publication.
