KnowledgeWorks Global Ltd. Launches 2024 Editorial Compensation Benchmark Study

Recurring Report from KGL Consulting Compares Editorial Compensation Data from Dozens of Journals Across a Broad Range of Disciplines

KGL Consulting, the scholarly publishing consultancy arm of KnowledgeWorks Global Ltd. (KGL), has formally announced the opening the 2024 edition of its Editorial Compensation Benchmark Study, designed to provide a basis of comparison for remuneration across journal editorial office positions. The 2024 report will be offered at no cost, but only to participating organizations.

The study is open to peer-reviewed scholarly journals that primarily publish original research. The final report to be distributed in November will identify the current low, medium, and high ranges of compensation for editor-in-chief and associate editor positions (including related positions such as deputy editor, section editor, and statistical editor). KGL will provide breakouts according to broad journal categories (medical/basic science/social science), journal Impact Factor, submissions, acceptance rate, and other relevant covariates. The report will also address areas that may impact journal operations and budgets such as evolving editorial position responsibilities and policies related to research integrity.

Since 2011, KGL Consulting has gathered and reported editorial compensation data to scholarly journal publishers who sponsored data collection efforts for a fee. The 2024 report is provided gratis, conditioned only on recipients also contributing to the study by sharing their anonymized compensation data. KGL will ensure confidentiality via non-disclosure agreements.

Cara Rivera, Vice President, Consulting and Market Analysis at KGL commented, “Change is accelerating across the journal publishing industry—and nowhere has the effect been more profound than in the editorial offices of scholarly journals. Our industry-leading report helps stakeholders set fair and thoughtful compensation policies for key editorial positions that reflect this shifting landscape. By accessing these data-driven insights at no charge, participating organizations can expect to make the widest possible comparisons to remain competitive in their respective fields.”

KGL is enrolling new participants in its 2024 Editorial Compensation Benchmark Study through July 26, 2024. Interested contributors are encouraged to submit a survey participation inquiry at www.kwglobal.com/compensation-study.

Editorial Moves at the MIT Press Hone in on Core Publishing Strengths across Art, Science, Design, and Technology

Audet brings strategy and vision as editorial director; Hindley promoted to senior editor to head the Art, Architecture, and Design portfolio

2024 brings exciting changes to the book acquisitions team at the MIT Press. In January, Janice Audet (formerly executive editor at Basic Books) assumed the role of editorial director bringing more than 20 years of experience in publishing, particularly in trade science. Building on the Press’s mission and reputation for innovation, Audet launched an ambitious strategic program for acquisitions editors to better meet the needs of the Press’s academic, professional, and trade markets today and advance knowledge that will best serve its readership in future.

To expand upon the MIT Press’ legacy of excellence and innovation in art and architecture publishing, a new Art, Architecture, and Design (AAD) portfolio has been created, focusing on publishing leading authors with contemporary cultural relevance. Newly promoted Senior Editor Victoria Hindley will assume leadership of the new portfolio. Audet says, “Victoria’s 25 years of publishing experience in art, visual culture, design, and architecture, along with her proven success and cultivated partnerships make her a natural fit for this exciting portfolio. I have every confidence we have the ideal team to catalyze this vision.”

Hindley joined the MIT Press in 2016 after working in publishing and the arts for two decades in both the USA and Europe. She has developed numerous international publications including limited fine press editions by Salman Rushdie and Wole Soyinka. At the MIT Press, Hindley has published award-winning titles including A Black Gaze: Artists Changing How We See by Tina M. Campt; Architectures of Spatial Justice by Dana Cuff; and The New Designer: Rejecting Myths, Embracing Change by Manuel Lima.
Senior Editor Victoria Hindley.

“Readers come to the MIT Press seeking books that will transform the way they see the world. In turn, I seek bold and exceptional writing that is culturally relevant and responsive to contemporary global urgencies,” said Hindley.

In the coming year, the MIT Press looks forward to publishing such engaging AAD titles as Ruth Asawa and the Artist-Mother at Midcentury by Jordan Troeller, Abundance Not Capital: The Lively Architecture of Anupama Kundoo edited by Angelika Fitz and Elke Krasny, and Climate Propagandas: Stories of Extinction and Regeneration by Jonas Staal.

For Hindley, it is important that this new publishing portfolio befits the Press’s internationally acclaimed legacy that began in the 1960s with influential titles such as The Bauhaus by Hans Wingler, while expanding the boundaries of the fields. “It is essential for the portfolio to examine how art, architecture, and design impact our lives and shape our perception of the world.”

Launch of UPLOpen.com: Revolutionizing Access to Open Knowledge and Empowering Global Sustainability Goals

In an ambitious move to democratize access to scholarly knowledge and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the De Gruyter eBound Foundation is thrilled to unveil UPLOpen.com, a product of University Press Library Open (UPLO), an innovative website that curates high-quality, open access scholarship from the world’s leading university presses.

UPLOpen.com is a direct response to the growing demand for open access scholarship and the urgent need to address the global challenges identified in the UN SDGs. All books are free to read online or download, and UPLOpen.com’s emphasis on the SDGs underscores the distinctive dedication of university presses to integrate the SDGs’ expansive targets into their day-to-day operations and structure.

“Publishing books of global importance is central to the DNA of university presses,” said Peter Potter, Executive Director of De Gruyter eBound. “Finding those books, however, can be a challenge amidst the noise of the internet. Our goal with UPLOpen.com was to create a welcoming place on the web where people could go to find authoritative research from the world’s top university presses. This initiative is a testament to the collective power of the academic community’s commitment to fostering positive change, inclusivity, and sustainability worldwide.”

At launch, UPLOpen.com proudly hosts more than 350 open access books from over thirty university presses, including two landmark collections: Luminos, from the University of California Press, and TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem), a pilot project of the Association of American Universities (AAU), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and Association of University Presses (AUPresses), which concluded in 2022 but continues to release new titles. By mid-2024, the number of titles hosted on UPLOpen.com is expected to exceed 2,500, with further plans for significant growth already in motion for 2025 and beyond.

UPLOpen.com platform is committed to open principles and practices; and is fully optimized to support digital-first, open content distribution. Developed in collaboration with Ubiquity, a trusted partner of researchers, universities, and academic societies, UPLOpen.com utilizes open-source infrastructure, which benefits the broader open-source community.

According to Ubiquity CEO Brian Hole, “UPLOpen.com is unique in its integration of the SDGs into the core of academic publishing, underscoring our commitment to both advancing scholarship and contributing to a sustainable and equitable world. UPLOpen.com is also designed to catalyze a shift to open access among traditional university presses by offering them not only a high-quality online platform but also a range of professional publishing services tailored to effective OA publishing.”

See you in Boston!

Webinar Preview | The Scholarly Kitchen: Staffing Up for Research Integrity

Join us for a webinar on staffing a research integrity unit in a publishing office. This event is hosted by The Scholarly Kitchen and moderated by Chef Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Professor/Coordinator for Research and Teaching Professional Development in the University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Guest panelists include Kim Eggleton, Head of Peer Review & Research Integrity for IOP Publishing; Yael Fitzpatrick, Editorial Ethics Manager for PNAS; Adya Misra, Senior Research Integrity and Inclusion Manager for Sage Publishing; and Amanda Sulicz, Publishing Ethics specialist for IEEE.

There has been a lot of programming around research integrity in recent years, much of it designed to raise awareness about the problem. But this webinar promises to be different: it will focus on practical ways to integrate research integrity roles into scholarly publishing teams. “SSP members already know that there’s a research integrity problem. It’s not a surprise,” says Hinchliffe. “The people SSP serves are the people who need to know what to do about this problem.”

Integrating research integrity roles is a particular challenge for small to mid-size publishers, who may be trying to figure out how to create a role like this in an environment of increasing costs and decreasing revenue. That’s why Hinchliffe invited speakers from across the scholarly publishing industry, including big and mid-size publishers, commercial and nonprofit, and people at a diversity of career stages.

The panelists will provide insight into the ways their organizations handle the nuts and bolts of research integrity, such as defining the responsibilities of the people working in these roles, the technologies available to publishers, and how ethics offices are using them.

This webinar will be targeted towards publishers that have a research integrity officer (dedicated or part-time), or even places with one officer who are planning to expand, as well as people who supervise such a unit. Attendees will learn how other publishers are doing this work and learn some best practices (and alternative practices) to make these units as effective and efficient as possible.

Although paper mills have been in the headlines, Hinchliffe wants to make it clear that research integrity is about more than high-profile problems like image manipulation and authorship-for-sale. It includes correctly documented competing interests, compliance with institutional review boards, compliance with animal welfare policies, and acknowledging funders.

“Research integrity is not just the big splashy things we’re seeing in the headlines,” says Hinchliffe. “Those are definitely critical and important, but it obscures issues like ‘are the right people listed as authors, and only the right people listed as authors?’”
