Feb 1, 2017 – The Career Development Committee of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) is pleased to invite applications for the 2017 Annual Fellowship Program.
The SSP Fellowship Program deadline was March 1st and has now been closed.
The Fellowship Program offers a wide range of career development and nurturing opportunities for students and early-career professionals in the scholarly publishing industry. SSP will award up to 12 fellowships at the Annual Meeting in Boston MA, May 31– June 2, 2017.
“With more than 100 applications last year for just twelve coveted spots, the Fellowship program has become quite competitive,” says SSP Executive director Melanie Dolecheck. “It’s been very exciting to watch these talented students and early career professionals get involved in SSP committees and task forces; taking an active part in shaping the future of our programs.”
The current travel support includes reimbursement of up to US $1,300 for domestic applicants and up to $2,000 for those coming from abroad. The fellowship extends beyond travel support, though and provides a year-long program with training opportunities, complimentary SSP membership and registrations for selected SSP events.
A notable aspect of the program is the pairing with a mentor from the publishing and library fields. The mentors and mentees meet via quarterly webinars.
“The SSP Fellowship was a game-changer for me, not only was I able to attend the SSP annual meeting, but I had the incredible experience of being mentored by Adrian [Stanley], who has spared no effort in bringing me into various circles in the field.,” says current fellow Mohammad Hossein Asadi Lari. “I couldn’t me more grateful for the amazing opportunities that this fellowship has made possible!”.
His mentor, Adrian Stanley, Vice President Publisher Business Development at Digital Science, adds, “Being able to put my experience and SSP network to good use to support, advise and interact with Mohammad was wonderfully rewarding. Mentoring is definitely a win-win, and a two-way street. I strongly encourage more SSP members to get involved with our programs.”
Students enrolled in publishing or library and information science programs and early-career professionals in the first four years of their employment in the scholarly communications industry are eligible to apply. Applicants need to send their resumes along with responses to three questions posted on the Fellowship program site.
In order to promote engaged active members, the SSP Fellowship recipients are expected to report on sessions they observe at SSP, join and be actively involved in an SSP committee, participate in a fellowship project and surveys, and work with committees to promote and highlight the Fellowship program. Thus, starting this year, applicants will be asked to discuss how they intend to apply the Fellowship to their life after the conference.
