Atypon Heightens Information Security Measures for Protecting Customers’ Content and Data; Creates New Department of Information Security and Privacy

May 16, 2017 – Santa Clara, CA – Atypon has expanded its commitment to enterprise-level IT security and privacy, establishing a Department of Information Security and Privacy and appointing Michael Goodman its director. Goodman will lead Atypon’s security and privacy environment with next-generation controls for protecting publishers’ content, data, and other sensitive corporate information.

Goodman will be responsible for developing and implementing well-documented, transparent global information security and privacy policies and procedures, ensuring compliance at every level of the Atypon organization, from employee conduct and technology protection to product application security for Literatum, the company’s SaaS online publishing platform. This new position reports to Atypon CEO and founder Georgios Papadopoulos.

“The integrity of Atypon customers’ information has been of paramount importance since the day I founded the company, and I’m pleased to say that we have an unblemished 20-year history of maintaining the trust of our customers and the security of their content and data,” said Papadopoulos. “Michael’s new role will help ensure that I can say the same years from now.”

Goodman’s career path spans every aspect of the information security lifecycle, from software development, systems engineering, incident response, vulnerability assessment, forensics, and threat intelligence to staffing, policy, processes, procedures, and management. He has led enterprise cybersecurity efforts for numerous US federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Justice, and for corporations like Verizon, the Bank of New York Mellon, and Mars, Inc. He has built online banking systems for major financial organizations and has designed and implemented both private and public cloud solutions.

“My priority is to ensure that Atypon publishers will continue to have the information privacy and independence that they require to successfully compete and grow their business on the Literatum platform,” said Goodman. “In the face of increasingly sophisticated adversaries, enterprises need next-generation cybersecurity countermeasures in order to uncover vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.”

Last fall, after its acquisition by global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Atypon hired IBM Security Services to conduct a data security and privacy review of existing and planned security practices. Goodman’s initial priority will be to address recommendations in the IBM report. He will work closely with Atypon’s IT and engineering teams to improve current security and privacy best practices that continue to ensure that no Atypon customer, Atypon staff, or Wiley staff has unauthorized access to content, usage data, or other proprietary client information; that no data leaks occur across clients; and that Atypon clients’ information remains segregated, secure, and sequestered behind firewalls.

The newly established Atypon Publisher Advisory Board (APAB), comprised of publishing customer representatives and attended by key Atypon employees, including the Director of Information Security and Privacy, is charged with reviewing the security and privacy plans and implementations, recommending policy, and coordinating an annual third-party audit.
