November 17, 2017 – Leiden / Boston / Paderborn / Singapore / Beijing (CN) – International publisher Brill launches the Philosophy of Film book series. Interested in more than simply interpretation, the series seeks to place film in relationship with classical philosophical questions such as (its own) essence, truth, or beauty. “This series is a great venue for philosophers who want to account for their experience of specific films, directors, or the phenomenon of film in general,” says series editor Thorsten Botz-Bornstein.
The series defines philosophy broadly. Benefiting from the intellectual wealth of the entire history of the Humanities, it is intended to be a source for anyone interested in the philosophical dimensions of cinema. “Launched at a time where we must urgently consider how film and media impact personal and political tides, Brill’s new Philosophy of Film series will offer new horizons for the relationship between screen culture and the way in which we understand the world,” says editorial board member Hunter Vaughan from Oakland University, author of Where Film Meets Philosophy.
While there are several book series on film studies, not many publishing houses have a series devoted to the philosophy of film. Brill’s Philosophy of Film bridges the fields of art studies and philosophy. “It is truly exciting to have a series devoted to this relatively new and vital subject area. Readers will pay attention!” says editorial board member Rey Chow, professor of literature at Duke University and author of Primitive Passions: Visuality, Sexuality, Ethnography, and Contemporary Chinese Cinema.

The first two volumes in the series will be published later this month: Death in Documentaries, by Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter, and Plotinus and the Moving Image, edited by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein and Giannis Stamatellos.
