Brill Launches New Journal: Journal of African Military History

September 19, 2017 – Leiden / Boston / Paderborn / Singapore / Beijing – International publisher Brill launches a new journal, the Journal of African Military History, in collaboration with Professor Roy Doron, Winston-Salem State University, and Professor Charles G. Thomas, US Air Command and Staff College.

Brill adds the peer-reviewed journal to its growing publishing portfolio in Military History and in African Studies. The Journal of African Military History will initially consist of two issues per year, and will be available online and in print. Its inaugural issue has been published in July: http://booksandjournals.brillonline.com/content/journals/24680966/1/1-2

Advisory Board member Professor Richard Reid (School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) said: “The arrival of this journal marks, at last, the coming of age of one of the most vibrant and exciting themes in African historical studies: the exploration of the culture and practice of warfare. The Editorial Board is a ‘who’s who’ of the leading scholars in the field, and they will ensure that the journal showcases the very finest work on war and military culture, from the precolonial past through to more recent history. The journal has been a long time coming, and will be welcomed by students and historians of war in Africa and indeed beyond.”

“This new journal is an excellent addition to Brill, strengthening both our Military History program and our African Studies program,” adds Dr Kate Hammond, Acquisitions Editor at Brill and responsible for the new journal. “It is a key part of the important academic movement to bring these two fields together, and to re-instate military history in Africa’s past. Much research remains to be done in the field, and we hope that the journal will offer a focused and high-caliber forum for the presentation and dissemination of this work for years to come, as well as stimulating the further development of this burgeoning area of research.”

The journal’s editorial board enthusiastically welcomes previously unpublished manuscripts from all disciplines that situate the study of African military experience within a historical context, and also welcomes submissions for themed special issues.
