“Open Access: Understanding the Mission, the Models, and the Mindsets” is back by popular demand!

Attendees from last year’s workshop described it as “extremely useful,” “very informative,” and “packed with information,” so don’t miss this opportunity!

We are excited to announce the return of our 101-style, introductory workshop, “Open Access: Understanding the Mission, the Models, and the Mindsets,” happening Thursday, July 14, 2022, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm ET. Highly interactive, this workshop will be of interest to both early-career professionals as well as those more experienced in scholarly communications who want to enhance their understanding of the latest developments in open access publishing and their contexts in the wider academic ecosystem.

Over the past 20 years, Open Access publishing has evolved from an ideal into a widely accepted practice in scholarly communications. But who funds OA, how it is implemented, and to what extent content is truly “open” can vary widely. Attendees of this introductory workshop will learn about the history and evolution of OA, from the Budapest Open Access Initiative of 2002 to Plan S, from green and gold OA models to the latest transformative agreements.

The workshop will also cover:

  • Brief history of OA and its position in the broader context of Open Science
  • Different types of OA, from green to diamond
  • Affordances and limitations of OA
  • OA considerations for different stakeholders
  • An introduction to funding models: transformative agreements, pure publish agreements, memberships, single-payment

The workshop will be moderated by Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Instruction; and Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Additionally, Lisa is a long-time chef on The Scholarly Kitchen.

“We are so grateful that Lisa will be leading this popular workshop once again,” said SSP Program Director, Mary Beth Barilla. “Lisa’s posts on The Scholarly Kitchen introducing readers to transformative agreement models have been incredibly well received and she brings that same energy to her instruction.”

Sponsorship opportunities are available for the workshop. Please contact partnerships@sspnet.org for more information.
