Research Square announces new Editor in Chief, Michele Avissar-Whiting, PhD

July 9, 2020 – Durham, NC – Michele Avissar-Whiting, PhD, has been appointed Editor in Chief of Research Square. She brings a strong background and perspective to the newly created role, having received her Ph.D. in Medical Science from Brown University and being a powerful driving force in the company since November 2011.

With an eye to the future, Avissar-Whiting says, “Scholarly publishing is undergoing a kind of revolution where research is increasingly being shared early — under researchers’ own terms — and its scrutiny is becoming a public affair. As Editor in Chief, my focus will be on establishing and maintaining responsible practices for our leading preprint platform; understanding, through innovation, how to make early engagement as productive as it can be; and fostering our company’s long-standing mission of supporting equity in research communication.”

At the time of this announcement, Research Square is home to over 30,000 preprints, rising to the position of the leading multidisciplinary preprint platform. In crossing this and future milestones, Avissar-Whiting will serve as the editorial voice of Research Square and the brand’s In Review service. Not only will she be responsible for establishing and communicating editorial policies, but will also lead the Research Square content strategy, lending her voice to the conversation around preprints and their role in the future of research communication.

On the subject of Michele’s role as EIC, Amye Kenall, Vice President of Publishing and Product, states, “As preprinting sees more uptake in the biomedical and clinical sciences, preprint platforms must adapt to a higher level of editorial care for the content, as research integrity issues start to appear in ways we rarely see in the social or physical sciences. We are incredibly excited to have Michele not only on board at Research Square, ready to tackle these issues in our own practices and content, but to have her voice in the wider industry community defining the norms in this preprinting space.”
