Webinar Preview | The Future of Research as a Global Enterprise

Our 2022 webinar series continues with “The Future of Research as a Global Enterprise” happening Wednesday, April 13, at 11 am EDT. Registration for the event remains open with a discount available for SSP members.

In the post-Cold War era, many observers have conceptualized science as a global activity, with substantial international collaboration, more readily facilitated cross-border scholarly communication, and even UN-level efforts to steer science towards Sustainable Development Goals. But regional differences, geopolitical strains, and challenges to developing a global research infrastructure have all posed challenges to global science. In this webinar moderated by Alice Meadows (Director of Community Engagement, NISO and President, SSP),

Ana Heredia (Consultant), Haseeb Irfanullah (Independent Consultant-Environment, Climate Change, and Research Systems, Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh), Jennifer Kemp (Head of Partnerships, Crossref), and Roger Schonfeld (Director of Libraries, Scholarly Communication, and Museums for Ithaka S+R) will consider whether science can ever be truly “global.”

Alice Meadows is NISO’s Director of Community Engagement, responsible for engaging with and developing their member community. She was formerly Director of Communications and Director of Community Engagement at ORCID; before that, she worked for many years in scholarly publishing, including at Wiley and at Blackwell Publishing. She is also a Co-Founder of the MoreBrains Cooperative, which provides consulting services to organizations across the research ecosystem. She is actively involved in the information community, and she received the SSP Distinguished Service Award in 2018, the ALPSP Award for Contribution to Scholarly Publishing in 2016, and the ISMTE Recognition Award in 2013.

Based in Brazil, Ana Heredia is a former researcher turned scholarly communications specialist. She has international experience in developing institutional relationships with funding and governmental agencies, universities and societies, and publishers and editors. Working with both large organizations as well as smaller, mission-driven nonprofits, she has also driven awareness and engagement strategies for research solutions and infrastructure providers.

Haseeb Irfanullah is a biologist-turned-development practitioner, and often introduces himself as a research enthusiast. Over the last two decades, Haseeb has worked for different international development organizations, academic institutions, donors, and the Government of Bangladesh in different capacities. Currently, he is an independent consultant on environment, climate change, and research systems. He is also involved with University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh as a visiting research fellow of its Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) in Dhaka. Haseeb has served as the editor for the Bangladesh Journal of Plant Taxonomy, and his interest in research communication involved him with INASP’s activities, like BanglaJOL and AuthorAID. Haseeb has been involved in designing and facilitating workshops, training sessions, and dialogues for young and mid-career researchers and journal editors of Bangladesh to improve their understanding of journal publishing practices and standards. He also writes articles and thought pieces on scholarly systems and works with relevant agencies to improve Bangladesh’s research ecosystem. Haseeb has a PhD in aquatic ecology from the University of Liverpool, UK.

Jennifer Kemp is Head of Partnerships at Crossref, where she works with members, service providers and metadata users to improve community participation, metadata and discoverability. Prior to Crossref, she was most recently Senior Manager of Policy and External Relations, North America for Springer Nature. Her experience in scholarly publishing began with her work as a Publication Manager at HighWire Press, where she had a variety of nonprofit and commercial publisher clients. Jennifer’s perspective on the industry remains influenced by her years as a librarian and she is active in a number of community initiatives. At Crossref, she chairs the Books Interest Group and the Metadata User Working Group. She also serves on the Next Generation Library Publishing Advisory Board and the Open Access eBook Usage (OAeBU) Board of Trustees.

Roger C. Schonfeld is director of Libraries, Scholarly Communication, and Museums for Ithaka S+R. Roger leads a team of subject matter and methodological experts and analysts who conduct research and provide advisory services to drive evidence-based innovation and leadership among libraries, publishers, and museums to foster research, learning, and preservation. He serves as a Board Member for the Center for Research Libraries. Previously, Roger was a research associate at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
