2017 SSP 39th Annual Meeting
Seminar 1: Indexes for Content Findability: New Trends and Technologies
The move towards digitized content enables end-users to simply use a search feature to find information in published sources. Indexes remain critical for users of scholarly content, however, because they need greater precision and recall than what search can provide. Speakers from a range of backgrounds will explore trends and technologies in indexes for digital publications, both books and periodicals. After an introduction to indexes and thesauri, including comparisons of back-of-the-book and periodical/database indexes, the session will cover issues and trends in creating indexes for digital book content, including EPUB specifications, embedded indexing, issues of ebook index entry references and pagination. The session will also cover issues in database indexes for periodical articles, including how to support consistent indexing and enhance content discoverability with a taxonomy/thesaurus, manual vs. automated indexing implementations, potential benefits to collaboration between publishers and database providers on consistent subject indexing, and user interface considerations.
