Sponsored Session: Launching a Multidisciplinary Open Access Journal in a Mega

Sponsored Session
Sponsored Session: Canadian Science Publishing: Launching a Multidisciplinary Open Access Journal in a Mega-Journal World

With an increasing number of researchers and funders interested in open access publishing, there has been a recent proliferation of open access options for researchers from both small- and medium-sized publishers to large mega journals. With this in mind, how can small- and medium-sized publishers compete in this open access world and carve out a space for their open access publication? Covering the lessons learned from launching FACETS, Canadas first and only multidisciplinary science journal, Canadian Science Publishing, an independent, not-for-profit publisher, will review the process of launching an open access journal that includes a discussion of important steps and consultations, how to find your competitive edge, and ways to provide innovative tools and services. This session will also include a discussion regarding business models and differences between subject-specific open access journals and multidisciplinary open access journals. Meant as a learning opportunity for small- and medium-sized publishers interested in open access publishing and as an opportunity for funders, librarians, researchers, and other publishing partners to learn more about FACETS, this session aims to encourage an open dialogue about the associated risks, challenges, and opportunities of launching a new open access journal.
