An Update on Open Access Books: All is Not Green and Gold Speaker Biography

Charles Watkinson is Associate University Librarian for Publishing at University of Michigan Library and Director of University of Michigan Press, a merged position unique in academic publishing. He has been a board member of the Association of American University Presses and the Society for Scholarly Publishing, and was an initiator of the Library Publishing Coalition. He is currently the PI on several grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation aimed at improving the infrastructure for the publication of digital scholarship in the humanities. He has recently completed work on a research project called Mapping the Free Ebook Supply Chain.

Sven Fund In 2015, Sven founded fullstopp, a consulting and investment agency specialising in scholarly publishing as well as institutions in the educational space. Sven invests in and/or manages companies such as the Journal of Medical Insight and Inkitt.com, and is the CEO if Knowledge Unlatched, one of the leading initiatives in open access. Sven is a lecturer at Humboldt University and publishes on Open Access as well as the digital transformation of the publishing industry.

Rod Cookson Rod has worked in scientific and educational publishing for more than 20 years, helping publishing evolve to best serve researchers’ needs. He is currently Managing Director of IWA Publishing, which spreads knowledge about the world’s most valuable resource, water. Rod previously spent eight years at Taylor & Francis as Editorial Director, transforming the Earth, Biological & Environmental Science journal division and bringing Medical journals back into the organisation. Rod has also worked for Blackwell Publishing and Reed Education.

Ros Pyne is Head of Policy & Development, Open Research at Springer Nature, where she manages projects in support of the company’s open access strategy and policies and heads up the open access monograph programme. In her time at the company she has developed and implemented campaigns including the first publisher-led trial of open peer review for academic books, the publication of Palgrave Macmillan’s first open-access chapter in a hybrid book, the transition of Nature Communications to full open access, and the development of Springer Nature’s open access policy and funding support service for authors.
