David Thew is a specialist in executive search, recruitment, resourcing and outsourcing in publishing and digital content with over 30 years’ experience. He was joint founder and MD of the international publishing and knowledge recruitment company Intelligent Resources, founded in 1997 and with offices in London, Frankfurt and Paris. In 2009, Intelligent Resources merged with its main competitor TFPL and David became Director of Publisher and Content Provider Recruitment, building TFPL’s executive search offering and championing the use of social media as a recruitment and resourcing tool.
David left TFPL in 2013 to establish his own executive search consultancy, working with clients across the scholarly publishing market to hire at middle, senior and board-level across all publishing and business disciplines. He added a US associate in 2016.
David has most recently merged his company with the consultancy, project and interim management specialists Maverick, adding his executive research expertise to their multi-disciplinary consultancy portfolio to provide a global end-to-end resourcing service for the scholarly and educational publishing markets.
David is a Council member of ALPSP and a committee member of SSP’s Education committee. He is also a member of STM’s Early Careers committee and Chair of its Career Guidance sub-group. He is also a Fellow of the UK’s Institute of Recruitment Professionals.
Alison Mudditt joined PLOS as Chief Executive Officer in June, 2017, where her primary role is to ensure PLOS’s continuous innovation, bold leadership, and mission-driven differentiation in the field of scientific communication. Prior to PLOS, Alison served as Director of the University of California Press for six years where she ushered in new strategies to lead the Press into the digital age, including the innovative journal and monograph Open Access programs, Collabra and Luminos. Previously, Alison was Executive Vice President at SAGE Publications, leading publishing programs across books, journals and digital platforms. Her nearly 30 years in the publishing industry also include leadership positions at Blackwell Publishers in Oxford, UK, and Taylor & Francis Inc., in Philadelphia. Alison is a frequent speaker at industry meetings and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers, and on the Advisory Board for the Authors’ Alliance. In the past, Alison has also served as Vice Chair of the Scientific Publications Committee and a member of the Open Science Committee for the American Heart Association; on the Executive Council of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the American Association of Publishers; and as Co-Chair of the Dean’s Leadership Council at California State University, Channel Islands.
Peter Harrison has over 20 years experience in the scholarly publishing industry and has worked at Elsevier throughout this period. Prior to joining Elsevier, he completed an honours degree at the University of Edinburgh and a PhD at the Australian National University. He is currently based in Philadelphia, though for the majority of his career he has been based out of Oxford, UK. Peter is responsible for a global team of Publishers based in the US, UK, Netherlands and Germany, who manage a portfolio of approximately 180 health science journals in a range of medical specialty areas, with a combination of proprietary and society-owned titles.
