Making Data Dynamic

Concurrent 3B: Making Data Dynamic

This session shows how two innovative organizations are making data dynamic and providing access to data in user-friendly ways. The first is the OECD, who has done pathbreaking work on making vast amounts of the world’s statistical and economic data understandable and accessible. Using a state-of-the-art HTML5-based approach, the OECD delivers publications to a wide variety of devices, including phones and tablets, and gives the user the ability to “see” specific data of their own selection, in addition to receiving the data in tabular form as XML, HTML, PDF, an interactive graphic, or a spreadsheet for local manipulation, all generated and delivered automatically upon user request and fitting the user’s specific queries. Complementing the OECD is the University of California Curation Center (UC3), part of the California Digital Library. The UC3 group is developing services to help researchers throughout the data life cycle. These services include DMPTool, a web-based application that steps researchers through creating a Data Management Plan, and the DataUp tool, which helps researchers organize, describe, and archive their tabular data. The UC3 is also active in the areas of data citation and publication via their EZID identifier service.
