SSP Washington DC Regional Online MeetUp

NFTs in Scholarly Publishing

Tuesday, October 25, 2022 | 12:00–1:00 pm ET

Do NFTs have a future in scholarly publishing? NFTs—non-fungible tokens—are records of “ownership” of assets that are stored on blockchains. NFTs can be bought, sold, resold, and traded on online platforms, and can have value, at least potentially, including as speculative collectors’ items or through the addition of ‘smart contracts’ that govern resale rights. We’ll discuss what NFTs are, explore some potential use cases for NFTs in scholarly publishing, and consider possible impacts for scholarly publishers, researchers, scientific information infrastructures such as university libraries, computer centers or university publishers, and other creators and contributors. We’ll be joined in an interactive conversation with Todd Carpenter, Executive Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO); Markus Putnings, University Library of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany; Bill Rosenblatt, President at GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies; and John W. Warren, Director and Associate Professor, George Washington University.
