Spotlight on Generations Fund Supporter: Crossref

Crossref makes research objects easy to find, cite, link, assess, and reuse. They are a not-for-profit membership organization that exists to make scholarly communications better. They rally the community; tag and share metadata; run an open infrastructure; play with technology; and make tools and services—all to help put research in context. They are also a generous repeat presenting sponsor of SSP’s Virtual 5k Walk, Run, and Roll, which benefits the Generations Fund. We sat down to speak with them about why it is so important for them to be involved with SSP, the Virtual 5k, and the Generations Fund.

How did your organization first become involved with SSP?

Crossref joined SSP to support its mission of disseminating scholarly content. There are many common goals between Crossref and SSP, including promoting best practices in scholarly publishing and promoting the use of standards and technology to enhance research.

Why do you feel it’s important for your organization to be involved with SSP’s Virtual 5k?

We are happy to support SSP’s Generation Fund, which aspires to provide long-term support of fellowship, mentoring, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs that enhance the future of scholarly communications. The SSP Virtual 5K is a fun, wellness-focused, and inclusive way of bringing the community together to support this effort.

Why do you feel it is important the Virtual 5k supports the Generations Fund and SSP’s Fellowship, Mentoring, and DEIA programs?

We share the same values of equity and inclusion. These are the Crossref truths. These are the principles that guide us in everything we do.

  • Come one, come all
  • One member, one vote
  • Smart alone, brilliant together
  • Love metadata, love technology
  • What you see, what you get
  • Here today, here tomorrow

In the same spirit, we’ve recently launched the Global Equitable Membership (GEM) program, which offers relief from membership and content registration fees for members in the least economically-advantaged countries in the world.
