The Answer is Standards: How Community-Created Technical Standards Solve Problems in Publishing

Seminar 6: The Answer is Standards: How Community-Created Technical Standards Solve Problems in Publishing

Standards from organizations such as NISO, COUNTER, W3C, EDItEUR and FORCE11 play an important role in advancing publishing solutions. Standards used across the industry allow vendors and their customers and users to interoperate, communicate, and solve common problems, and free up attention and resources for differentiating features and customizations. This seminar will analyze the general conditions and problems in scholarly publishing that lead to varied standardization efforts. Representatives from several key initiatives and organizations will talk about their perspectives and reasoning for their particular standardization efforts and discuss a few specific standards in some more detail. We also expect a lively discussion with the audience to help us all gain understanding about issues in adoption and advancement of standards and how we might continue to improve the landscape.
