Annual Reviews to Provide Multi-Disciplinary Critical Reviews for Statisticians and Other Scientists

January 28, 2014Palo Alto, CA – Annual Reviews is pleased to announce the launch of its first new journal of 2014. The Annual Review of Statistics and Its Application will publish critical reviews about developments in the field of statistics and is edited by Stephen E. Fienberg, the Maurice Falk University Professor of Statistics and Social Science in the Department of Statistics, the Machine Learning Department, Heinz College, and Cylab at Carnegie Mellon University. With statistical methods and tools important to any study or field that involves quantitative data and reasoning—from biostatistics, bioinformatics, economics, and machine learning to psychology, sociology, and aspects of the physical sciences—the journal will provide broad analysis of major methodological advances and computational devices not only for statisticians and quantitative methodologists, but for all scientists and users of statistics.

Speaking for the editorial committee, Dr. Fienberg notes that, “We anticipate that the Annual Review of Statistics and Its Application will become a definitive source for cutting-edge statistical thinking and methodology, as well as serious cross-disciplinary research where statistics plays an integral role.” The journal will also play a vital role in optimizing libraries’ existing collections of Annual Reviews titles by further helping non-specialists to understand the methods behind developments in other fields; as Dr. Fienberg adds, “Our journal can be an integrating force for the entire spectrum of research in the Annual Reviews family of journals.”

Complimentary online access to the first volume of the journal, at http://www.annualreviews.org/journal/statistics, is available until January 2015. The journal’s articles explore the role of statistics in topics ranging from brain imaging to climate, and from evaluation of observational studies to the discovery of the Higgs boson. It also includes an introduction from Dr. Fienberg that examines past attempts to define statistics (back to the earliest appearance of the term in 1749) and illustrates the cross-disciplinary nature of the field. The journal’s aim is to acknowledge the importance of broadening awareness of evolving tools and methods, while recognizing core statistical principles and the need to connect statistical activity across diverse research domains.

“With the benefit of the full Annual Reviews platform, this new journal will be the first (and so far only) review journal in statistics to offer easy access to scholars who use statistics, as well as the more limited audience of statisticians,” notes Stephen M. Stigler, Ernest DeWitt Burton Distinguished Service Professor at the Department of Statistics of the University of Chicago.

The Annual Reviews team will have additional information about the journal at upcoming events, including VALA (February 3-6), ER&L (March 16-19), UKSG (April 14-16), SIOP (May 15-17), SLA (June 8-10), the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (August 1-5), and the Joint Statistical Meeting (August 2-7).
