The Scholarly Kitchen wins Silver Award in Association Media & Publishing’s 38th Annual EXCEL Awards

June 28, 2018 — Washington, DC – The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) was announced as a silver award winner in Association Media & Publishing’s Annual EXCEL Awards, which recognizes the best, and the brightest in association media and publishing. SSP was recognized for its work in 2017 in the Digital Media: Blog Site (Overall) category for its highly-regarded and influential blog, The Scholarly Kitchen. SSP is proud be honored among other leaders in association media and publishing. 300 finalists were selected from 841 entries.

The Scholarly Kitchen (TSK) has become the authority on scholarly publishing and communication. The blog serves all segments involved in the scholarly publishing community. Founded in 2008 and celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year, the blog is read by thousands of publishers, editors, librarians, researchers, and publishing service providers in more than 200 countries each day. TSK has more than 8600 subscribers to daily content alerts, more than 17,600 followers on Twitter, 604,000 visits each year, and 1.4 million page views annually.

Visitors come to TSK to learn about new developments in publishing and read up on key research reports and projects. Featuring an array of exclusive content from diverse and influential authors, the voice of the blog represents the many areas of scholarly communications and has an active comments section, further demonstrating the engagement of its readers.

David Crotty, TSK’s Executive Editor said, “Recognition like this is greatly appreciated, but all credit must go to our stellar group of authors who consistently offer up such insightful content, and to the SSP for their unwavering support of our editorial independence and (sometimes) controversial analysis.”

“We are privileged to recognize outstanding work in the association media and publishing industry this year. The EXCEL Awards showcase and spotlight first class association content that’s both innovative and enlightening in a rapidly changing world,” said Michael Marchesano, AM&P Executive Director.

TSK recently surpassed 10 million page views and 3.5 million visits since its inception. The website and logo were redesigned by Windmill Design, a Minneapolis graphic and web design firm in January 2017.

“The team at Windmill Design did an outstanding job of creating an updated, modern website that is both attractive and extremely functional. The project was managed very well and the final output truly captured the vision of the SSP volunteers who manage the blog,” said Melanie Dolechek, Executive Director of SSP.

The award winners were announced and celebrated at the 38th EXCEL Awards Gala on June 25, 2018. Jennifer Pesanelli, 2018-2019 SSP Past President, accepted the award at the Gala on behalf of SSP.
