Berlin/Boston/Ottawa, 25 July 2023

De Gruyter and the Association of Canadian University Presses (ACUP-APUC) are entering a partnership for the global distribution of scholarly eBooks. Academic publishing house De Gruyter will distribute the complete book output of all 17 Canadian University Presses to a global audience via degruyter.com.

As a result of the partnership, about 650 new titles per year and a backlist and archive of roughly 12.000+ academic eBooks will become digitally available to library patrons worldwide on one digital platform. Libraries can now obtain DRM-free, multi-user digital access to this comprehensive and complete collection of must-have Canadian university press content.

The partnership with ACUP-APUC extends De Gruyter’s University Press Library (UPL) program. UPL is a community-led eBook distribution model that provides libraries with complete annual digital output from some of the world’s most renowned university presses from the United States, Europe, and Canada, all with unlimited-user access.

The Association of Canadian University Presses is Canada’s collective voice of French- and English-language scholarly publishing. Its members publish scholarly titles primarily by Canadian researchers and on Canadian issues and subjects of global significance. ACUP’s members constantly strive and innovate to refine funding, dissemination, and distribution models that positively impact the viability of scholarly publishing in an environment of rapid technological and social change.

De Gruyter, a leading scholarly press with over 270 years of experience in publishing excellent research, provides comprehensive publishing services to academic institutions, societies, and publishers through its imprints Ubiquity and Sciendo and its Publisher Partner Program. Services include digital eBook distribution and archive digitization, open access journal and book publishing for academic societies, repositories, and service infrastructures to enable universities and libraries to operate their own presses.

“The collaboration between ACUP-APUC and De Gruyter demonstrates our commitment to sustainable growth and adaptation in an ever-changing industry. By embracing creative new approaches and forming strategic alliances, we are confident in our ability to navigate market challenges, ensuring the longevity and success of our publishing endeavors,” said Brian Scrivener, Director of the University of Calgary Press and President of the Association of Canadian University Presses.

“Sustainability in the HSS publishing industry has emerged as a significant market concern, particularly for small to mid-size university presses. Recognizing the need for creative solutions to thrive in a global market, I am pleased to announce a groundbreaking agreement with ACUP-APUC. This strategic partnership aims to foster growth and expand our network of partners at the regional level while preserving the inherent value proposition of our UPL business model,” said Steve Fallon, President of De Gruyter Inc.
