As inclusion strategist Verna Myers once said, “Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.” Attendees of this webinar will come away with a better idea of how individuals and organizations can move beyond good intentions to realize more inclusive workplaces in scholarly publishing. Panel speakers will cover tools, tactics, and strategies that can help to reset cultural norms and redress power imbalances in our institutional structures that occur around gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and other differentiators.
Susan Spilka, co-founder of the Workplace Equity Project., will moderate. Susan led internal and external communications at Wiley for two decades, playing a key role in the development of its widely admired global culture. Along with AIP Publishing’s Simone Taylor and consultant Jeri Wachter, Susan conducted the WE Survey last year to establish a baseline of data about diversity and inclusion in scholarly publishing workplaces.
Amy Diehl, Ph.D., Associate VP and Chief Information Technology Officer at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, will speak about subtle bias towards women at work: what it is and how it can be eliminated. Whereas overt discrimination is likely to be conscious and unlawful, subtle bias consists of negative or ambivalent treatment of social minorities that often conveys ambiguous intent. She’ll discuss six factors that characterize subtle bias and present the framework she developed (with research partner and Biola University professor Leanne Dzubinski, Ph.D.) to eliminate it. Amy’s doctoral dissertation focused on how female leaders in higher education deal with adversity, and since then, her research has looked at gender barriers in a variety of industries. She is excited to join the conversation about scholarly publishing workplaces.
Jessica Gedamu will discuss Springer Nature’s diversity and inclusion agenda and accomplishments since she joined as Global Director of Diversity & Inclusion about a year ago. She will describe the D&I Roadmap 2018/2019 and D&I governance infrastructure she’s developed with the company’s leadership to support buy-in from and participation at all organizational levels. Jessica brings a broad perspective to the table, having earned an M.A. in International Business and an M.A. in Gender and Diversity Competence, and spent almost a decade working on these issues with multiple industries.
