2017 SSP 39th Annual Meeting
Concurrent 3C: The Future of Content and its Containers…
Publishers, their customers (librarians), and their customers’ customers (researchers) exist in a technology and content consumption landscape far larger than scholarly publishing, and expectations are impacted by the larger landscape. Publishers must adapt to meet expectations shaped by external forces like Google by keeping up with how content is presented, sold, and ultimately discovered.
This session focuses on challenges that publishers face, and how publisher responses affect each of important stakeholder groups. Questions to be answered:
What is the added value of traditional containers (e.g. journals or books) in the era of online publishing when containers can be easily collapsed and chunks (article, chapter) published, discovered, and consumed as disintegrated units?
How will changes to the container impact dealings between publishers and librarians?
How does OA affect content containers and/or the emergence of new containers?
How does remixing of content and its packaging affect discoverability?
