2017 SSP 39th Annual Meeting

Concurrent 1A: The 100% Solution…

Industry Challenges
Concurrent 1A: The 100% Solution: Using Data to Make Better Business Decisions in Scholarly Communications (This session will be included in the SSP Virtual Meeting)

In an era of great uncertainty, not just in our industry, but on the geopolitical scene in general, it is more important than ever that decisions are not based on conjecture, gut feelings, or anecdata, but on real evidence. This panel will explore how diverse stakeholders in scholarly communications–publishers, librarians, and editors–use evidence to drive their decisions surrounding the creation, curation, and distribution of scholarly content. Representatives from each of these stakeholder groups will share how data plays a role in their decision-making, particularly with regard to how it informs their approach to other stakeholders in the community. Even when working from the same evidence, the value and role of data in decision-making may rest in the eye of the beholder; for example, what a sales manager views as a high level of usage or turnaways may look very different to a librarian. Moderated by Kent Anderson, the panel’s discussion will not only provide useful examples of how data can help us relieve uncertainty, but also reveal the complex and sometimes surprisingly different ways in which different approaches to data can complement as well as complicate each other.

Moderator: Kent Anderson, RedLink, LLC
