Concurrent 1C: Changes in Academic Book Publishing Models—What’s Working, What’s Not, and What’s Next

In 2012, a Scholarly Kitchen post entitled” Bury Your Writing Why Do Academic Book Chapters Fail to Generate Citations?” examined the challenges of exposing book chapter content and various possible solutions, including changing the way books are packaged (removing chapters from the book container), enhancing discoverability via better metadata, improving online access, and offering book and journal content on the same platform. This session will explore how the plight of academic book chapters described in 2012 has improved over the past five years and where there’s still work to be done. Key stakeholders, including a researcher, a publisher, and a vendor, will share success stories as well as experiences that didn’t quite work out. Dialogue between panelists and session attendees will help identify opportunities for further improvements to models to enhance discoverability, usage, citations, and ROI.

Vivian Berghahn, Berghahn Books, Inc.
Vivian Berghahn is Managing Director of Berghahn Books, where her responsibilities include advancing the companys online initiatives and the strategic development of its overall publishing program. With nearly 20 years of experience in academic publishing, she previously worked for Blackwell Publishing and Northeastern University Press and currently serves on the Books Committee for the AAP-PSP and as co-opted member of the ALPSP Council.

Katherine McCaffrey Stebbins, Harvard University
Katherine Stebbins McCaffrey is a Research Associate at Harvard Business School, working on the history of medical innovation. She has a PhD in American & New England Studies from Boston University, and she has researched, presented, taught, and written histories of technology and material culture for over 20 years.
