Concurrent 2A: Walking with Giants: How the Changing Role of Publishers is Shaping New Agendas for University and Society Presses

The role of the publisher in the scholarly ecosystem is changing rapidly, from a venue to streamline publication to a one-stop shop for researchers who want to advance in their field. Increasingly authors are looking to publishers to provide higher levels of service, and new methods to help drive the visibility of publications and provide additional feedback.

What implications do these changes have for societies and university presses, who often hold different objectives and have many more stakeholders to satisfy than purely commercial publishers? And what do librarians and researchers really want from them? From small to large, where are there opportunities for these organizations to adapt their approach to remain competitive in what is rapidly becoming an author’s market?

In this session, we’ll hear case studies from several organizations who have taken up this challenge, and from librarians who work with them. Participants will share insights into how the changes they are making align with their strategic goals and values, and well then invite the audience to discuss the challenges they are facing. Speakers will pose some statements and suggested opportunities for development which attendees will be invited to respond to.

Patrick Hansard, American Psychiatric Publishing
Patrick Hansard has held a variety of positions at a number of professional, STM, and education/childrens publishing houses. Beginning his career with the French group Massons US offices, marketing and selling medical books and journals, he later joined The McGraw-Hill Companies, and from there the Grolier Publishing group, before starting his own consulting company supporting US and UK publishers with product and market development as well as strategic planning. and digital publishing implementation. In December 2012, Patrick joined American Psychiatric Publishing, a division of the American Psychiatric Association, as Director for Sales and Marketing, overseeing all product lines and markets.
Elaine Lasda, State University of New York
Elaine Lasda holds the rank of Associate Librarian at the Dewey Graduate Library, University at Albany, State University of New York. In her day to day activities, Ms. Lasda is responsible for maintaining the Social Welfare, Gerontology and Dewey Reference collections. She is also the primary point person on citation searching, bibliometrics, and altmetrics for the University Libraries, and works closely with other Dewey staff on scholarly communications and open access issues. She is the 2015 recipient of the President’s and Chancellor’s Excellence in Librarianship Awards. She received a master’s level Certificate of Advanced Study in Data Science from Syracuse University in 2015, her M.L.S. from the University at Albany in 1997, and her B.A. in History from SUNY College at Oswego in 1990.
Amy Brand, MIT Press
Amy Brand was named Director of the MIT Press in July 2015. Previously, she served as VP Academic and Research Relations and VP North America at Digital Science. From 2008 to 2013, Brand worked at Harvard University, first as Program Manager of the Office for Scholarly Communication and then as Assistant Provost for Faculty Appointments and Information. Before moving to Harvard, she held long-term positions as an Executive Editor at the MIT Press and as Director of Business and Product Development at CrossRef. Brand serves on the National Academy of Sciences Board on Research Data and Information, the Duraspace Board of Directors, was a founding member of the ORCID Board, and regularly advises on key community initiatives in digital scholarship. She holds a B.A. in linguistics from Barnard College and a PhD in cognitive science from MIT.
Charles Watkinson, University of Michigan Libraries
Charles Watkinson is Associate University Librarian for Publishing at the University of Michigan Library and Director of University of Michigan Press. Prior to moving to Michigan in 2014, Charles was Director of Purdue University Press and Head of Scholarly Publishing Services in Purdue Libraries for five years, and Director of Publications at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens for five years. He has been a board member of the Association of American University Presses and the Society for Scholarly Publishing, and was an initiator of the Library Publishing Coalition.
