Editors in scholarly publishing often deal with difficult and complex editorial situations, and many times have to wade through this uncharted territory on their own. Panelists and participants in this highly interactive session will examine those editorial situations that create conflict or cause angst. Using the case study method, each presenter will talk about specific situations and experiences, with good outcomes, poor outcomes, or even no outcome. They will then lead an open discussion so that attendees with similar experiences can share their own difficult editorial situations (and bring up new issues for discussion and debate). Topics will include editor-in-chief transitions; editorial board challenges; ethical issues (plagiarism, copyright); peer review processes; and more. The session is carefully crafted to include situations that people from various types of organizations will find relatable, whether they are small publishers, societies, associations, university presses, or commercial publishers and it’s ideal for strengthening the skills and confidence levels of publishing professionals at all career stages.

Benjamin Hogan, Wiley
Ben Hogan is Regional Manager, Peer Review at Wiley, responsible for leading Wiley’s North American and Open Access peer review operations. He has 10 years’ experience in academic publishing, starting in books and journals content management, leading to journals peer review. Ben is a member of the ISMTE (International Society of Managing and Technical Editors) Ethics Committee and the Similarity Check Advisory Group, and is a past presenter at the CrossRef Annual Meeting. Ben’s professional interests include Open Access, author experience, editorial office data/analytics, and publication ethics.

Chloe Tuck is a Managing Editor at Technica Editorial Services, an editorial support company based in Carrboro, North Carolina. At Technica, Chloe manages peer review support for various journal editorial offices. She is the in-house coordinating editor for several journals, overseeing a team to ensure efficient daily operation and to cultivate best practices. Chloe is an active presenter for her local ISMTE group, and has reported on trends and innovations in publishing for EON magazine.
Peter Lynch, American Academy of Pediatrics
Peter Lynch is the Manager, Digital Strategy and Product Development at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in Elk Grove Village, IL. Peter oversees the development and delivery of digital publications, including subscription websites, eBooks, mobile apps, video products, and digital resources. Peter has more than 15 years of publishing experience, and has been at the AAP since 2012. Among his key initiatives at the AAP are Red Book Online, Pediatric Care Online, and AAP eBooks. Peter graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
William Breichner, Johns Hopkins University Press
William (Bill) Breichner joined the Johns Hopkins University Press in February 1996 as journals production manager. His responsibilities grew to include management of production for the nascent Project MUSE. He was named Journals Manager in 2001, and in 2003 was named Journals Publisher. Bill and the Journals division staff work with more than 80 scholarly journals, mostly in the humanities and social sciences and 30 professional societies to provide print and electronic production, marketing, distribution, and membership services. He previously enjoyed stints with the Sheridan Press and a small STM book publisher.
Lindsey Topp, American College of Gastroenterology
Lindsey Topp earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa in 2006. She has worked as an editor for a variety of non-profit scientific publications, including standardized test development and pharmaceutical standards. She has managed three scholarly journals and associated programs for the American College of Gastroenterology since 2012.
Patti Davis, Emerald Group Publishing
Patti Davis is a Publisher for Emerald Group Publishing, responsible for the journals in the company’s Business, Management and Strategy Collection. She has more than 15 years of experience both in books and journals publishing, working previously at Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. She has worked in marketing and public relations, as well, most notably at the University of Maryland College Park. Patti travels extensively for Emerald, networking with scholars and researchers at conferences held around the world.
